Our 'quick read' news summary

In a surprising discovery, a fossil believed to be a plant has been revealed to be the remains of a baby turtle. The fossils, collected in Columbia during the 1950s to 1970s, were initially classified as plant fossils in 2003. However, a recent study found that they were actually the remains of baby turtles, known as Sphenophyllum colombianum. The fossils date back to the Early Cretaceous period, around 113 to 132 million years ago. The unique combination of the fossils’ age and locality caught the attention of researchers, who affectionately nicknamed the fossil “Turtwig” after a Pokémon character.
