The National Episcopal Conference of Congo (Cenco) has condemned the Democratic Republic of Congo’s police crackdown on opposition supporters who were demonstrating against the high cost of living in Kinshasa. The police accused the protestors of not following their pre-approved itinerary, and the event ended with minors being violently arrested, beaten and robbed. The Cenco has urged the authorities to investigate the violations and to guarantee citizens’ fundamental rights, warning that if their rights are not protected, they “will soon have to exercise their power to sanction all the incompetents”. The single-round presidential election is scheduled for 20 December.
