South Korea’s food ministry has warned against eating green, fried toothpicks after TikTok users shared videos of themselves consuming them. The toothpicks, made from sweet potato or corn starch, resemble jade-colored curly fries when deep-fried. Despite their popularity on social media, the food ministry emphasized that the toothpicks’ safety as food has not been verified. The toothpicks are often found in Korean restaurants and are environmentally friendly and biodegradable. They are colored green using food coloring, which contains an ingredient called sorbitol that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and inflammation if overconsumed. TikTok trends have previously sparked warnings from officials and healthcare professionals.
