Dominica has established the world’s first sperm whale reserve, covering a 300 square mile patch of ocean where around 200 sperm whales regularly breed. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said the whales are prized citizens of Dominica and the reserve aims to protect them and maintain a healthy climate. The reserve prohibits commercial shipping and fishing, but smaller vessels engaged in artisanal fishing are allowed as long as they do not harm the whales. Tourists will also be able to view and swim with the whales in sustainable numbers.
