Former White House aide Gabe Amo, the son of Ghanaian and Liberian immigrants, has won the crowded Democratic primary for Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District special election. If elected, Amo would become the first person of color to represent Rhode Island in Congress. Amo’s Republican opponent in the general election is U.S. Marine veteran Gerry Leonard. Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos, who hoped to become the first Latina elected to Congress from the state, congratulated Amo on his primary win. The general election will be held on November 7.
