A critically endangered western lowland gorilla was born at the London Zoo on January 17. The gorilla, named Mjukuu, gave birth after an eight-and-a-half-month pregnancy and a quick 17-minute labor. Mjukuu was seen cradling her newborn moments after the birth, and the zookeepers described her mothering instincts as wonderful. The infant was fathered by a gorilla named Kiburi, who arrived at the zoo as part of a conservation breeding program. The sex of the infant has not been confirmed, but if it is male, it could reach a height of up to 6ft.
