Conn was originally charged with aggravated murder, but the charge was downgraded to murder after he admitted to the crime. Conn’s defense argued that he was insane at the time of the crime and did not know what he was doing. Conn has a history of mental illness and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Conn is the only person to be sentenced for the crime and he is the only person to be sentenced to a 120-year sentence.
