A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences argues for the addition of a Category 6 to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane-rating scale, as recent storms have exceeded the intensity of Category 5 storms. The study found that at least five storms in the last decade have already reached Category 6-level winds, with Hurricane Patricia in 2015 reaching a peak of 215 miles per hour. The authors also found that a warming world increases the likelihood of Category 6 storms forming in the Atlantic. However, some experts argue that adding a Category 6 could create confusion and miscommunication for the public.
