Fake TikTok accounts have disseminated disinformation about Russia’s war in Ukraine to millions of users, according to data from the Chinese social media platform. The accounts targeted Ukrainian and Russian users, as well as European audiences, with content designed to promote pro-Russian narratives on the conflict. A BBC investigation discovered 800 fake accounts that spread false claims about Ukrainian officials and their relatives buying luxury items after Russia’s invasion in February 2022. TikTok stated that it had already begun investigating the accounts before the BBC’s report and had removed all identified fake accounts.
