Russian war critic Boris Nadezhdin has been barred from running in the country’s presidential election due to too many defective signatures. Nadezhdin submitted nearly 105,000 signatures in support of his bid, but the Central Election Commission (CEC) claimed that over 15% of the signatures did not qualify. The CEC did not provide evidence to support its decision. Analysts suggest that Nadezhdin’s candidacy was unlikely to be allowed as the Kremlin feared a potential surge of support for him. Nadezhdin was standing as a candidate on behalf of the Civic Initiative political party, co-founded by Ksenia Sobchak.
