British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak canceled a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis amid a dispute over the Parthenon Sculptures, also known as the Elgin Marbles. Greece has been urging for the return of the 2,500-year-old sculptures, currently held in the British Museum. Mitsotakis expressed frustration over the slow progress of talks for a possible loan deal for the sculptures. Sunak’s cancellation was seen as a snub, but Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden was available to meet Mitsotakis instead. The British government maintains that the marbles were legally acquired and a domestic law does not prohibit a loan agreement.
