Alcoa, the world’s eighth-largest aluminium producer, has announced that it will slow and then stop production at its Kwinana Alumina Refinery in Western Australia. This will result in the loss of around 750 Australian jobs, with 550 workers losing their jobs by July and another 200 by mid-next year. The reduction is aimed at helping Alcoa recover from the refinery’s record loss of $130 million in 2023. The company expects to see annual improvements of around $70 million from July this year. The decision was influenced by factors such as the refinery’s age, scale, operating costs, and current market conditions.
