The breaking wheel, also known as the Wheel of Catherine or execution wheel, was a Middle Age method of punishment for serious crimes like murder or rape. The convicted person would be tied to a scaffold and the wheel would be dropped on them repeatedly to cause as much damage and mutilation to them as possible without causing death. Once the person died, their body would be braided into another wooden spoked wheel and a fire would be lit beneath it. This method began to disappear in the late 18th century, but torture methods like the Brazen Bull continued throughout history.
