There has been a significant increase in the number of Indians illegally entering the United States, posing a challenge for the Biden administration’s efforts to control illegal border crossings. Data from US Customs and Border Protection shows that over 42,000 migrants from India crossed the southern border illegally between October 2022 and September 2023, more than double the previous year’s total. Additionally, around 1.49 lakh Indians were caught trying to unlawfully enter the US between February 2019 and March 2023. Factors driving this surge include economic reasons, preexisting networks within the Indian diaspora, and the perception of the “American dream.”
