According to a report by the CIVICUS Monitor, several Asia-Pacific nations are facing increased repression of civil society organizations, journalists, and protesters. Vietnam received particular criticism for failing to uphold its obligations as a member of the UN Human Rights Council. The report classified eight countries in the region as “closed”, including Afghanistan, China, Hong Kong, Laos, Myanmar, North Korea, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. The report highlighted cases of repression in Vietnam, including imprisonment of activists and the government’s use of censorship. CIVICUS called on the international community to pressure Vietnamese authorities to release political prisoners and repeal restrictive laws.
