Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach has told public schools in the state that they must inform parents if their children identify as transgender or nonbinary, even if the children have not come out at home. Despite there being no specific law in Kansas requiring this, Kobach argues that not disclosing this information violates parents’ rights. LGBTQ+ rights advocates argue that this policy puts transgender and nonbinary students in danger and aims to exclude them from public spaces. Five states have laws requiring schools to inform parents of such identities, while six encourage it. Kansas is not on either list.
