A book titled “A History of the United States” by Benson Lossing has been returned to a US library almost 100 years late. The book was on loan from St Helena Public Library in California since 1927 and was returned recently. The library, which has not used fines since 2019, would have charged $1,756 if the fine had still existed. The library staff hope to trace down the man who returned the book to learn how he came across it. The book is believed to be one of the original 540 volumes available when the Free Public Library building was inaugurated in 1892.
