Mexico City, Mexico — Ahead of the 2023 North American Leaders’ Summit, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and United States President Joe Biden held a meeting in which both leaders discussed migration, climate change, and the fentanyl crisis. Regarding border security, President Biden noted the need for a joint effort to combat the fentanyl “plague,” which, according to the U.S. leader, has claimed the lives of over 100,000 Americans thus far. Recently, the Mexican government recaptured Sinaloa Cartel underboss and fentanyl producer Ovidio Guzman, the son of jailed cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
