Aged care worker Marylynne Desveaux lost nearly $40,000 of her retirement savings in a cyber scam where hackers changed the bank details of one of her contacts. The hackers were able to make multiple transfers under her friend’s name to a scammer’s account, bypassing the bank’s cybersecurity triggers. Desveaux contacted ING, who closed her accounts and initiated an investigation. ING stated that they are unable to comment on the individual case but are committed to investigating and recovering money in scam cases. They also emphasized the need to educate customers on protecting themselves from scams.
