After 31 years, a puja (prayer ceremony) was performed in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi, India. The puja was allowed by a local court’s order, following a petition by Shailendra Kumar Pathak Vyas, the maternal grandson of the former priest of the complex. The Varanasi District Judge directed the authorities to make arrangements for the worship of idols within seven days. The Vyas family, considered the hereditary owner of the cellar, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and called it an emotional moment. The order is expected to be challenged in a higher court.
