American explorer Mark Dickey is being rescued from a cave in southern Turkey after becoming seriously ill during a descent. He is currently more than 500 feet underground but could be rescued “by tonight or tomorrow,” according to the Turkish Caving Federation. Dickey will rest at a camp below the surface before the operation continues. Nearly 200 people from seven European countries and Turkey are involved in the rescue effort. Rescuers have already ascended a path higher than the Empire State Building and are proceeding with caution to ensure Dickey’s safety.
