Africa’s largest wildlife NGO, African Parks, has purchased the world’s largest privately-owned rhino herd to rewild them across southern Africa over the next decade. The herd of more than 2,000 white rhinos had been bred in captivity as part of a project to flood the East Asian rhino horn trade with sustainably harvested horns. However, the project ran out of funding after the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) refused to grant an exception for the sale of rhino horn. African Parks secured emergency funding to purchase the entire herd and relocate them to secret locations.
