A forgotten masterpiece by 13th-century master Cimabue, titled “Christ Mocked,” was discovered hanging above a French woman’s hot plate. Initially mistaken for a Greek icon, the painting was valued at over $25 million and sold for four times its predicted amount at auction in 2019. The buyer, Fabrizio Moretti, believed it to be of immense value and called it one of the most important old master discoveries in the last 15 years. The painting is part of a diptych and will be added to the collection of the Louvre, joining another masterpiece of Cimabue.
